THE OLD RED LION

on Stoke Newington Church Street was first recorded in 1697. Originally two separate houses, it gradually evolved into a single public house. It remained in operation until 1924, when road-widening works on Lordship Road led to its demolition.

The present-day pub built on the site was designed by A. E. Sewell, the prolific interwar chief architect of the Truman Brewery. Sewell was responsible for the design of some 50 pubs for the brewery, including the Rose & Crown and the Army & Navy, both constructed during the 1930s.
